Scope of Works

• confirm asbestos type using existing survey or arrange testing if unknown

• erect sealed containment and set up negative pressure unit where required

• use trained operatives in appropriate PPE and respiratory protection to remove pipe insulation

• wet and carefully strip materials to minimise fibre release and double-bag waste

• label, store and arrange licensed removal and disposal with consignment note

• clean, decontaminate affected area and operatives and obtain clearance testing and certificate

Typically 3–6 hours for a short run of insulated pipe in a single room, 1–3 days for multiple rooms or where scaffolding and complex containment are needed; clearance testing can add a further day

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• Are you licenced for asbestos removal and can you provide the licence number?

• Do you carry employer’s liability and public liability insurance and can I see certificates?

• Will you provide a written scope, risk assessment and method statement (RAMS) before work?

• Who carries out the air clearance testing and will I receive the certificate and consignment note?

• How will you protect adjacent rooms and what decontamination arrangements are used?

• What are the payment terms and what could trigger extra charges?

How to Avoid Surprises

• provide clear parking or drop-off details and check access width for vans

• ensure power and water access or agree arrangements in advance

• clear rooms nearby and keep children and pets away from the work area

• have any existing asbestos survey or plans available for the contractor

• check building rules and permissions for scaffolding or working on risers
