• stitch, resin inject or apply repair mortar depending on material and severity

• reinstate plaster/render, skim and finish ready for decoration

• check for associated issues (damp, settlement, structural movement) and advise on next steps

• tidy and remove debris; recommend monitoring or engineer referral for large/opening cracks

Most cosmetic internal crack repairs take 1–4 hours including preparation and finish; external or structural repairs can take 1–3 days because of access, multiple trades and drying/cure times

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• What do you believe is causing the crack and is monitoring or immediate repair needed?

• Will you need a structural engineer or a sign‑off for this repair

• What materials and finish will you use and can you match the existing plaster/paint

• How long will surfaces need to dry before I can redecorate

• What dust control and PPE will you use and do I need to move/remove furniture or cover valuables

• Do you provide a written quote and a warranty for the repair

How to Avoid Surprises

• clear access to the crack and cover or remove nearby furniture and floor coverings

• reserve a parking space close to the property if possible to reduce time on site

• tell the tradie about past movement, damp problems or previous repairs so they can plan materials

• agree whether scaffolding or permits are needed for external or high‑level work and budget accordingly

• check for asbestos in older homes before opening walls and tell the tradie if the property is pre‑1990

• secure pets and arrange safe zones so the team can work without interruption
