Scope of Works

• confirm the quantity (m3) and grade of topsoil to be delivered

• deliver topsoil by tipper to an agreed drop point and offload to wheelbarrows or plant

• spread, level and lightly consolidate topsoil to the required depth for planting or turf

• remove existing spoil, weeds and small debris to prepare the area (disposal charge may apply)

• protect nearby patios, paths and lawns and clean up wheelbarrow tracks before leaving

• take basic precautions for contamination and wear PPE (gloves, masks) if required

Typical suburban garden (2–4 m3): 2–6 hours on site. Larger volumes or restricted access can extend to a day or more. factors that extend time include narrow access, long wheelbarrow runs, additional ground preparation, wet weather and contamination requiring testing

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• what grade of topsoil are you supplying and is it certified to BS 3882

• how many cubic metres will you deliver and how do you calculate quantity

• does the quote include spreading and finishing or delivery only

• are waste removal, skips or disposal charges included in the price

• what size vehicle or plant will be used and will you need a dropped kerb or parking permit

• do you have public liability insurance and do you provide any workmanship guarantee

How to Avoid Surprises

• measure the area and agree the depth so m3 and price are clear

• ensure clear access, reserve parking and inform neighbours if the vehicle blocks the road

• protect drives and paths with boards or sheeting if delivery vehicle will cross them

• check for buried services and mark gas, electric and irrigation lines before work starts

• keep pets and children away during delivery and spreading

• agree who is responsible for disposal of existing soil and how payment will be taken
