Gutter Replacement Guide

Scope of Works

Inspect roofline – measure gutter runs, note downpipe positions, check fascias/soffits for rot.

Erect access – ladder stand‑offs or alloy tower; scaffold if three storeys or conservatory overhang.

Strip out old guttering & brackets, disconnect downpipes and bag waste.

Fit new brackets at 600 mm centres with correct fall to outlets.

Install new gutters & downpipes (uPVC, aluminium or cast iron) with expansion joints and seals.

Water‑test & seal joints, adjust falls, then dispose of old guttering at licensed site.

Questions to Ask Your Trade

  1. Are you FENSA / CompetentRoofer registered and fully insured?

  2. Is the quote fixed per metre and inclusive of VAT, disposal and sealants?

  3. What gutter material and profile (uPVC half‑round, ogee, aluminium) are you supplying?

  4. Will you replace or cap damaged fascias/soffits found once gutters are off?

  5. Do you install leaf guards or balloon outlets, and at what extra cost?

  6. How will you access over conservatories or extensions—tower, scaffold or long‑reach vac?

  7. What guarantee applies to joints, brackets and workmanship?

How to Avoid Surprises

  • Photograph each elevation and measure approximate runs when seeking quotes.

  • Reserve driveway space for the gutter rack van or skip.

  • Confirm whether decorative cast‑iron look‑alike sections need special brackets.

  • Clear loft hatch access if fitter needs to check underside of roofline.

  • Ask for a written water‑test sign‑off and keep receipts for home‑insurance records.
