Shelf Installation Costs Guide

Scope of Works

• Assess wall type (stud, solid, masonry) and verify cable & pipe locations.

• Measure, mark‑out and level shelf positions; drill and fix brackets or concealed hangers.

• Mount factory‑made shelves or cut, edge‑band and finish timber/MDF for custom builds.

• Reinforce alcoves or erect side panels/back boards for built‑in units.

• Sand, prime and paint or stain as specified; fit edging strip or concealed LED if ordered.

• Tidy work area, remove dust and off‑cuts, and provide maintenance tips.

Time on Site

• Single floating shelf: 1 – 2 hours.

• Set of 4‑8 shelves: 3 – 4 hours.

• Built‑in alcove / media wall: 1 – 2 full days (build + finishing).

• Extra time for solid brick drilling, uneven walls needing packers, elaborate paint finishes or integrated lighting.
  

Questions to Ask Your Trade

1. Do you charge fixed‑price per shelf or hourly – and what’s the minimum call‑out?

2. Which fixings suit my wall type and stated load (books, ornaments, AV kit)?

3. Will you supply materials or fit items I provide – and are sourcing fees added?

4. How will you hide cables or achieve a true “floating” look if desired?

5. Is sanding/painting included or handled by a separate decorator?

6. What guarantee covers pull‑out strength and finish quality on custom units?

7. Will you remove packaging and leave the area dust‑free?
   

How to Avoid Surprises

• Access & parking: reserve a space close to the door for mitre saws and timber deliveries.

• Wall readiness: finish plastering/painting and locate hidden pipes before installation day.

• Power & dust control: agree vacuum extraction or sheeting in lived‑in rooms.

• Loading limits: confirm maximum weight per shelf in writing to prevent sagging claims.

• Finishing sequence: schedule decorators after shelf fit but before final styling.

• Neighbour courtesy: noisy drilling in flats—check building quiet‑hours.

Rates include 20 % VAT and typical 2025 mainland‑UK labour/material prices.
