Scope of Works

• Isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and confirm power off

• Inspect the planned location and route cable from the nearest live circuit or consumer unit

• Cut chases or surface-run cable, install a suitable back box and mount the socket

• Make good surrounding plaster or fit a pattress box and seal cable entries

• Test for correct polarity, earth continuity and RCD operation and label the circuit

• Clear debris, remove small waste and use PPE and safe electrical working practices

Most single‑socket installations take 1–3 hours on site including testing and tidying. Jobs that need a new radial circuit, extensive chasing through solid masonry, consumer unit alterations or scaffolding can take a day or more

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• Are you a registered electrician and can you provide Part P / BS 7671 certification?

• Will you isolate and test the circuit and provide a written test report on completion?

• Do you need access to the consumer unit or will a new circuit be required and how much will that add to the price?

• How will you protect floors and joinery and will you clear plaster dust after chasing?

• What extras might be charged (chasing, re-plastering, scaffolding, consumer unit work)?

• Do you carry public liability insurance and what are your payment and guarantee terms?

How to Avoid Surprises

• Show where the consumer unit is and ensure access on the day

• Clear the area around the planned socket and cover furniture and floors

• Confirm parking close to the property for a van and an uninterrupted work period

• Mention if the property has asbestos, loft insulation or restricted access

• Check whether building management permits or notices are needed for flats

• Agree in writing the testing and certification you expect and where the certificate will be left
