Glass Panel Replacement Guide

Scope of Works

Survey & measure the damaged pane; identify glass type (single, toughened, double‑glazed). Make safe—board up or tape shards; vacuum loose glass. Order or cut new glass to precise size, edges polished to BS EN 12150 (toughened) or BS EN 1279 (sealed units). Remove old beads / putty, take out remaining glass and clean rebate. Fit replacement panel, add glazing packers, seal with silicone or new beads. Dispose of broken glass at licensed transfer station; supply waste‑transfer note.

Time on Site

  • 60–90 minutes for a straightforward ground‑floor pane swap.

  • 2–3 hours if frame needs re‑puttying, beads painting, or upper‑floor access with scaffold tower.Delays arise from bespoke toughened‑glass lead times (2–4 days) or tight alley access for glass carriers.

Questions to Ask Your Trade

  1. Are you FENSA‑registered or hold GGF membership, and is public liability insurance current?

  2. Will you supply a BS‑compliant toughened or sealed unit certificate with the invoice?

  3. Is the quote fixed (parts + labour + VAT) or subject to glass‑size revision?

  4. How will broken glass be disposed and do you issue a waste‑transfer note?

  5. Can you provide obscure, laminated or energy‑rated options, and at what additional cost?

  6. What is your lead time for special‑order glass and do you offer a temporary board‑up?

  7. How do you protect floors and furniture inside the room during removal?

How to Avoid Surprises

  • Photograph the window inside & out, include tape‑measure for scale; send to glazier for accurate quote.

  • Reserve parking near the property for glass‑rack van unloading.

  • Warn of restricted access (narrow stairs, upper‑floor sash) so correct suction cups or mini scaffold are loaded.

  • Confirm whether colour‑matched glazing beads or putty repainting is included.

  • Keep copies of glass spec labels (Low‑E, argon, toughened stamp) for future replacements.
