Scope of Works

• inspect the burn and identify finish type (lacquer, oil, wax)

• carry out localised sanding to remove char and feather edges

• fill any depressions with appropriate wood filler and sand smooth

• colour-match stain or dye and blend into the surrounding timber

• apply a suitable finish (varnish/oil/wax) and buff to match sheen

• use dust extraction and PPE when sanding; contain dust to avoid contamination

Most surface burn repairs take 1–3 hours on site. Deeper burns, replacement sections or large tables can take 3–6 hours and may need a follow-up visit for drying and a final coat

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• how deep is the burn and can it be repaired without replacing the top

• what finish products will you use and can you match the existing colour and sheen

• will the repair be completed in one visit and how long are drying times between coats

• do you use dust extraction and what PPE should I expect during sanding

• how will adjacent areas be protected from dust and finish splatter

• if a replacement section is needed what is the lead time and cost estimate

How to Avoid Surprises

• clear the table of linens, ornaments and fragile items before the visit

• provide level, accessible space and let the tradie know about tight doorways or stairs

• arrange sensible parking close to the property for a van and tools

• tell the tradie about previous repairs or hidden damage you know of

• allow 24–48 hours for stain/finish to cure before heavy use and check drying requirements

• if you live in a flat check communal access, noise rules and required permits before booking
