Scope of Works

• locate incoming supply and identify extent of lead pipework

• isolate and shut off water, drain downstream pipework and make safe

• excavate external runs or expose internal runs to access lead pipe

• remove lead pipe and replace with new MDPE or copper supply and fittings

• pressure test new installation, flush and take a lead-sampling if requested

• reinstate surfaces (tarmac, paving or floor/wall chase) and remove waste, trades to wear PPE for contamination control

Most domestic lead pipe removals take 3–8 hours on site for a single run, with full external excavations and reinstatement extending to 1–2 days

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• do you have experience replacing lead supply pipes and can you provide references

• will you liaise with the water company and obtain any required permissions

• what testing or certification do you provide after replacement (pressure test, sampling)

• how will you protect my property from contamination and do you use PPE for lead handling

• who manages reinstatement of surfaces and can you itemise that cost

• what insurance and warranty do you carry for excavation and pipework replacement

How to Avoid Surprises

• give clear access to the stopcock, buried runs and any loft or underfloor spaces

• check parking and space for excavation plant and tell your tradie about restrictions

• flag up any known services (gas, electric, fibre) and provide plans if available

• arrange permission for kerb or road opening well in advance if pipe runs under the highway

• keep pets and children away from work areas and ask about temporary water arrangements
