Scope of Works

• Inspect the glazed unit to identify cracked, shattered or failed sealed units

• Measure aperture and confirm glass type (single, toughened, laminated or sealed double-glazed unit)

• Remove broken glass, old putty or silicone and prepare the frame for a new pane

• Fit replacement glass or sealed unit, reglaze or tape bead and apply appropriate sealant

• Check weatherproofing and security, tidy trims and apply finishing touches

• Dispose of broken glass safely and leave the area clean; tradespeople will use PPE when handling shards

Time on Site

Most domestic pane replacements take 0.5–3 hours on site depending on pane size, frame condition and access. Upstairs or bespoke sealed-unit replacements can take a half to a full day or require an off-site made unit and a return visit.

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• What type of glass will you fit and why?

• Can you match thickness, edge finish and any lead or patterned glazing

• Will you board or secure the opening today if the replacement unit is delayed?

• Do you have public liability insurance and do you provide a workmanship guarantee?

• Will scaffolding, a cherry picker or a second trader be needed and how does that affect cost?

• Are disposal and replacement trims/infill included or charged extra?

How to Avoid Surprises

• Ensure clear access to the window from inside and outside and remove curtains or blinds

• Confirm parking close to the property for the van and for any scaffold deliveries

• Tell the tradie about restricted access, narrow lanes or conservation/listed status before booking

• Have a plan for pets and remove fragile items from the work area

• Ask if a made-to-measure sealed unit will be needed and whether a temporary board-up is provided
