Stair Railing Installation Guide

Scope of Works

• Survey & measure‑up – confirm wall structure, baluster spacing and Building‑Regulation heights.

• Remove existing rails/balusters and make good any fixing holes.

• Cut and pre‑finish new handrail, infill panels or spindles (softwood, hardwood or metal).

• Fix newel posts / brackets into studs, masonry or stringer using appropriate anchors.

• Install handrail & balusters ensuring consistent rise/run alignment and secure connections.

• Sand, seal or paint exposed timber/metalwork where required.

• Final compliance check for height, load‑bearing and smoothness; tidy and bag up off‑cuts.

2 – 4 hours for a straight 12‑step flight; up to a full day for returns, landings or hardwood finishing. Extra time if the staircase needs plaster repair, awkward loft‑turn access, or bespoke curved rails. Checkatrade

Questions to Ask Your Trade

1. Do you supply and fit, or will I need to order the rail/spindles separately?

2. How will you anchor into my wall type (stud, solid brick, metal stringer)?

3. Is the quote fixed‑price including VAT, materials and disposal of the old rail?

4. Will the finished handrail meet current Building Regulations for height and spacing?

5. Can you colour‑match or pre‑finish the rail to existing woodwork?

6. What warranty do you give on fixings and finish?

7. Do you hold public‑liability insurance for work inside occupied homes?
   

How to Avoid Surprises

• Reserve parking close to the door for the carpenter’s van.

• Clear the staircase and landing of pictures, runners and belongings.

• Confirm power outlets are available for mitre saws and sanders.

• Check whether the job needs a decorator afterwards (fresh paint may be required).

• Tell the installer about children, pets or restricted working hours in advance.

• If rails run beside a drop‑void or gallery, arrange any temporary edge protection or permits beforehand.
