Scope of Works

• Carry out an initial site survey and measured survey to record levels, drains and existing features

• provide a concept design and planting plan and discuss materials, finishes and budget

• prepare the area including clearance, minor excavation and base preparation for paving or turf

• install hard landscaping elements such as patios, paths, edging and small retaining features

• carry out planting, turfing and mulching and connect basic drainage where required

• remove waste and leave site tidy and provide a final walkthrough with maintenance advice

• operate plant and power tools with appropriate PPE and follow contamination controls for soil

Design consultations typically take 1–2 hours; small installations (planting, turf, minor paving) are usually 1–3 days; medium projects with paving, drainage or retaining work take 3–7 days. Wet weather, poor ground conditions, access restrictions or waiting for materials can extend the programme

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• are you insured for public and employer liability and can i see a certificate

• what is included in the written quote and what counts as an extra

• who will be on site each day and do you subcontract specialist trades

• how will you protect existing boundaries, fences and paving during works

• what guarantees do you offer for workmanship and plant establishment

• will you locate underground services and do you need me to arrange any permits

How to Avoid Surprises

• confirm vehicle access and a place to park a van or small dumper

• mark out boundaries, underground services and any features to be retained

• agree material choices and delivery windows before work starts to avoid delays

• let the tradesperson know about pets, neighbours and access restrictions in advance

• check whether planning permission or building regulations apply for walls, drainage or major level changes

• agree a payment schedule and written sign-off for completion and any defects period
