Car Clutch Repair Guide

Scope of Works

• Road-test to confirm symptoms; plug diagnostic tool to log clutch-switch or hydraulic errors.

• Raise vehicle, remove gearbox/transfer case, inspect clutch plate, pressure plate, release bearing and flywheel.

• Replace complete clutch kit; machine or swap flywheel if heat-spotted or dual-mass is worn.

• Refit gearbox with new input-shaft seal, torque bolts to spec, bleed hydraulic line or adjust cable.

• Top up transmission oil, reset any clutch-pedal position sensors, road-test under load.

• Provide parts warranty, torque sheet and service stamp.

3 – 6 hours in a well-equipped workshop. Extra time if: 4×4 or rear-transaxle layout, exhaust/cross-member corrosion, dual-mass flywheel change, or slave-cylinder buried in bell-housing.

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

1. Will you fit an OE-quality complete kit (plate, pressure plate, bearing) and supply the parts receipt?

2. Is the flywheel inspected and resurfaced or replaced if out of spec?

3. What warranty covers both parts and labour?

4. Do you reset clutch-learn values or adaptives in the ECU after installation?

5. Are gearbox oil, hydraulic fluid and one follow-up adjustment included?

6. How do you price additional hours if rusty fasteners or alignment issues arise?

7. Will you recycle the old clutch and oil in compliance with Environment Agency rules?

   
   

How to Avoid Surprises

• Access & Parking: Ensure space for flat-bed or recovery truck if clutch fails completely.

• Service History: Bring previous clutch or gearbox notes to aid diagnosis.

• Security Codes: Have radio/immobiliser codes ready; battery may be disconnected.

• Aftermarket Mods: Tell the tech about performance remaps or uprated plates—they affect warranty.

• Transmission Oil Grade: Confirm the garage uses manufacturer-approved fluid.
