Scope of Works

• carry out a visual inspection of the gearbox exterior and seals

• check gearbox oil level and condition and note contamination

• inspect seals, gaskets, breather and mating faces to locate the leak source

• perform a road or stationary test where safe to confirm leak under load

• take photos, note fluid type and quantity lost, and provide a written report with recommended next steps

• advise on containment, required parts and whether gearbox removal or further diagnostics are likely

Most gearbox leak inspections take 1–2 hours including checks and a short test drive; times increase if the gearbox must be removed, vehicle access is restricted or advanced diagnostics are needed

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• are you insured for vehicle work and do you provide written estimates

• what tests will you carry out to pinpoint the leak and will you perform a road test

• if parts or gearbox removal are needed how will you quote labour and parts and do you charge a diagnostic fee

• what contamination and waste disposal procedures do you follow and are those costs included

• do you offer any written guarantee on diagnostic work or replaced seals/parts

How to Avoid Surprises

• ensure clear, level access and that the vehicle can be moved for a short test drive

• confirm parking and any permits required for the tradesperson's van

• provide service history or note of previous gearbox work to speed diagnosis

• tell the tradie about site restrictions, low clearance or if the vehicle is on a slope

• ask whether PPE and oil containment will be used and whether additional cleaning or repairs could add cost
