Time on Site

  • 2–3 hours for a straight swap into existing posts.

  • 4–6 hours when digging new post holes or working on a sloping site.Extra time required for hardwood drilling, masonry fixings in old brick, or wet weather delaying concrete set.

Questions to Ask Your Trade

  1. Is the quote fixed (labour + materials + VAT) or hourly after survey?

  2. Will you supply pressure‑treated posts and BS EN 12150‑compliant hinges and latches?

  3. Do you remove the old gate and provide a waste‑transfer note?

  4. How will you protect paving and plants during concrete mixing or drilling?

  5. What guarantee applies to workmanship and timber treatment?

  6. Can you fit gate‑stops or leaf guards to prevent wind slam—at what cost?

  7. What is your policy for access issues (narrow alley, on‑street parking)?

How to Avoid Surprises

  • Send photos & gate width/height when requesting quotes.

  • Reserve parking close to the gate for heavy timber delivery.

  • Check if planning permission is needed for gates over 1 m high beside a highway.

  • Mark underground services and irrigation lines before digging posts.

  • Confirm that fresh concrete needs 24 h cure—plan gate use accordingly.
