• use appropriate PPE; isolate and report suspected disease or pest contamination

Most single border thinning jobs take 1–3 hours on site; larger borders or heavy overgrowth can take 3–6 hours. Factors that extend time include poor access, wet ground, large shrubs or trees, extra disposal needs and discovery of diseased plants

• are you insured for garden work and waste removal

• how many years' experience do you have with border thinning and my plant types

• will you remove arisings from site or leave in compostable bags

• how will you protect surrounding lawn, paving and desirable plants

• do you charge extra for travel, steep access or unexpected pest/disease work

How to Avoid Surprises

• ensure clear access and parking close to the border

• mark any plants you want left intact and flag underground services

• confirm whether you want green waste left for composting or taken away

• let the tradie know about pets, gates or neighbours' access restrictions

• expect jobs in wet weather to take longer; agree a contingency for extra disposal
