• mow and strim lawn areas and remove cuttings

• prune and reduce overgrown shrubs and small trees to agreed levels

• remove weeds, clear borders and lift unwanted plants and roots

• clear patios, paths and hard surfaces of moss and debris

• chip branches on site where safe and leave woodchip or remove to tip as instructed

• remove non-hazardous rubbish, pots and garden furniture and dispose or recycle

• identify larger tree works or stump grinding as extras and advise on permits if needed

Small tidy-up 1–3 hours, medium clearance (overgrown borders, several bushes) half a day to 1–2 days, large clearances or those needing stump grinding and bulky waste removal 2–5 days Factors that extend time include poor access, large volumes of green waste, protected trees, bad weather and the need for specialist machinery; tradespeople will use PPE when handling nettles, brambles or contaminated waste

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• do you have public liability insurance and can you show proof

• what exactly is included in the price and what counts as an extra

• how will you dispose of green waste and do you charge for skip or tip fees

• will you chip and leave woodchip on site or remove it

• do I need any permission for tree works or to remove protected species from the site

• what measures do you take for site safety and will you use PPE around contaminated waste

How to Avoid Surprises

• confirm access details such as side gate width and any steps to the garden

• check parking options for a van or skip and tell your tradie about restrictions

• point out buried services, irrigation pipes or oil tanks before work starts

• let the tradie know about pets, neighbouring boundaries and where to leave woodchip or skips

• ask in advance about handling of hazardous items such as asbestos, contaminated soil or chemical containers

• agree in writing what will be left on site (woodchip, compost) and what will be removed to avoid later charges
