Scope of Works

• inspect the area and record levels, slopes and drainage paths

• remove vegetation, old turf and surface debris and dispose of arisings

• mark out high and low spots and set finished levels

• supply and spread topsoil/subsoil or sharp sand to fill hollows and build levels

• compact and grade using rakes and plate compactor to achieve an even fall for drainage

• finish with seed or turf and provide light roll and initial tidy-up

• remove all waste, sweep access points and advise on establishment care; operatives will use PPE when handling soil and green waste

Small garden levelling typically takes 3–8 hours (single operative) while larger or heavily overgrown gardens can need 1–2 days. factors that extend time include poor access, removal of large roots or old paving, need for additional soils or machine hire, and wet weather

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• have you levelled gardens like mine before and can you show photos or references

• what machinery will you use and do you need vehicle access to the lawn or gate width restrictions

• how will you deal with drainage and finished falls to avoid ponding

• is waste removal included or will you charge extra for skips or tipping

• are you insured (public liability) and will operatives use PPE when handling soil

• what guarantee do you offer for seeded areas or laid turf and initial maintenance requirements

How to Avoid Surprises

• clear access and point out narrow gates, steps or low arches

• reserve parking or inform neighbours if vehicle access is needed for machinery

• point out buried services, irrigation pipes or drainage runs before work starts

• identify protected plants, tree roots or boundary features you want retained

• agree the finished levels and photographic record before and after work

• plan for wetter weather and ask about contingency for delays or additional soils
