• wear PPE and follow safe working‑at‑height practice for ladders or elevated work

Small front‑garden hedge tidy typically 1–2 hours; medium runs 2–5 hours; long or tall hedges needing chipper or access equipment can take a full day or more. Factors that extend time include hedge height and length, volume of deadwood, restricted access, nesting birds and adverse weather

Questions to Ask Your Tradie

• what exactly is included in the quote (trim, chip, remove, tidy)

• are you insured for public liability and for work at height

• how will green waste be handled and what are disposal charges if any

• do you need permission for protected hedgerows or are there nesting birds on site

• will extra equipment be needed (chipper, scaffold, cherry picker) and what are the costs

• how do you handle unexpected issues such as large deadwood, tree roots or underground services

How to Avoid Surprises

• ensure clear access and unlock gates for the crew

• agree parking or permit arrangements and a place to load waste

• point out any underground cables, irrigation pipes or services near the hedge base

• tell the tradie about nesting birds or protected species before the job

• remove small ornaments and move vehicles from driveways on the day
